Stop-Motion-Films: Fight Bullying

This is an example of what students were able to create in 1,5 hours. After a short introduction.

Creating Stop-Motion-Video engages young learners in a special way. It is one of the easiest ways to create films without a lot of equipment. Also, there is no need for (good) actors and (if you do not shoot or film people) Stop-Motion-Films can easily and legally be shared on youTube and other platforms.

Stop motion is an animated filmmaking technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion or change when the series of frames is played back. Any kind of object can thus be animated, but puppets with movable joints (puppet animation) or plasticine figures (clay animation or claymation) are most commonly used. Puppets, models or clay figures built around an armature are used in model animation. Stop motion with live actors is often referred to as pixilation. Stop motion of flat materials such as paper, fabrics or photographs is usually called cutout animation.

Soft Skills:

which means using ones imagination or original ideas to create an (artistic) product. In this case you try using and combing clay, paper, objects and people to tell a story

Problem Solving

requires a methodical way to find solutions for complex or difficult problems. For the creation of stop-motion-films you repeatedly need to solve various issues: e.g. lighting, perspective, directing, and many many more

Team Work

is a combined action or effort of a group of people. It involves finding out what specific skills people in the team posses and making the best and most efficient use of these skills. In a stop-motion-filming process you need: a director (the boss), someone who controls the camera (camera (wo)man), someone who creates the story board (screen writer), someone who creates all the props and scenery that are needed for each scene, maybe actors, …

is the process of coming up with a sequence of actions that will lead to a specified goal. When shooting a movie, planning is essential because, for example, all the props need to be ready before you can start filming. The beauty of stop-motion (and what makes it so easy and appealing for beginners) is that if you forgot something you always can just stop “shooting” pictures and create whatever is needed.

is a feeling of trust in your own abilities, qualities, and your judgment. Creating Movies is one of the best ways to build up self-confidence since at the end you will realize that the effort you put in resulted in something beautiful that not just anybody could have done. Because no other person would have done quite the same way you did it.

Creating Stop-Motion-Videos…

…is very easy. Everything you need is:

  • a camera (a smartphone will do)
  • some kind of video editing app (phone or computer)
  • some creativity

Step 1:

Fix your camera.
It is essential that it does not move during the filming (unless that is what you need it to do). Even if you want to move the camera, try to avoid shaking it. This is one of the easiest ways to make your result look a lot more professional.
If you have use a tripod to mount the camera. If the camera needs to move: try putting the tripod on a skateboard or bicycle… If you do not have a tripod: try putting the camera on a table, chair or another hard surface.

Step 2:

Control your light.
Shooting stop-motion-films takes a lot of time. For a clip of about 20 seconds you will need to take
